Standard Practice for Testing Water Resistance of Coatings Using Water Fog Apparatus
ASTM D1735 is also known as the standard practice for testing water resistance of coatings using water fog apparatus. The ASTM D1735 test helps you to determine how the coating of your products is resistant to water under highly condensing humid conditions. What is the difference between ASTM D1735 and ASTM B117?
Although very similar to the ASTM B117 corrosion test, the ASTM D1735 only uses demineralized water (water without sodium chloride). On the other hand, the ASTM B117 uses salt spray testing when testing for corrosion. In some cases, exposure to water can be more detrimental compare to exposure to a sodium chloride solution as the chloride ions can be too big to penetrate the coating’s lattice. The ASTM D1735 test is also closely related to the ASTM G85 test, which is based on ASTM B117 but yields results that in many cases offer a better match with corrosion observations in the field.
In addition, ASTM B117 is considered an accelerated corrosion test. However, thin ASTM D1735 uses milder test conditions and cannot be considered an accelerated corrosion test. Testing Conditions
Samples are set in a watertight cabinet to allow for a free fog deposition on the test specimens. Unless otherwise specified, the chamber temperature is maintained at 38°C (100°F). The only variable test parameter is the test duration. Water penetrates the coating at a speed dependent on the surface finish characteristics including its porosity. Any visual changes such as color variations, blistering, peeling or any other similar damage is observed and reported.
ASTM D1735 test can induce coating degradation and permeation which ultimately will allow water to get to the substrate that the coating is trying to protect. Testing to this test method provides valuable information that can be helpful in predicting the product’s life expectancy.
