ASTM D4585 test now offered at Micom Laboratories
Micom Laboratories is proud to announce that it now offers the ASTM D4585 test as part of its polymer testing services. This standard describes an accelerated aging test which allows to assess the water resistance of coatings through the use of controlled condensation. Indeed, this method states the principles and the operating conditions of the experiment, but it does not provide any indications on the post-evaluation tests, on the preparation of the samples and on the specific test conditions. Lastly, the ASTM D1735 and the ASTM D2247 standards are alternatives of this practice.
ASTM D4585 test
The aim of ASTM D4585 is to quantify the water resistance of a coating through a condensation test. In other words, this method tries to assess the ability of the coating to abide deterioration that is caused by water by exposing the sample to a controlled temperature environment with a saturated vapor. By doing that, it is possible to observe the coating’s behavior towards water aggression on an accelerated basis and to foresee its performance in the field. In order to characterize the coating’s performance, it is mandatory to pair this method with a test protocol that can assess aesthetic properties such as: color change, blistering, the loss of adhesion and softening, because ASTM D4585 does not provide any indications regarding the evaluation of the results. Also, this standard can appraise the complete coating system, because failure in this method can be the byproduct of: substrate contamination, inadequate surface preparation or by the coating itself. Furthermore, by incorporating a periodic drying of the sample, this test protocol may be used by corrosion tests. Lastly, this test may be used as a quality control or as a research and development test because the result of the experiment is either the coating meets the specifications or not and this is based on the aesthetics of the sample.
Micom offers polymer testing services for a wide selection of material and products. For more information about the ASTM D4585 test, we invite you to contact our material testing laboratory today. It will be our pleasure to answer your questions about either of those tests.
Micom Laboratories is a third party industrial material testing laboratory accredited by A2LA, CGSB, ISTA and many other organizations.
