ASTM D570 standard now offered at Micom Laboratories

Micom Laboratories is pleased to announce that it now offers the ASTM D570 standard as part of its material testing and of its plastics and polymer testing services. This method describes various procedures which allow to assess the amount of water absorbed by the sample after an immersion in water. Moreover, the uniformity of the imbibed specimen may also be determined by this test protocol.

ASTM D570 test

The goal of ASTM D570 is to quantify the rate of absorption of water by immersing the specimen in water for a predetermined time frame. More specifically, this attribute is characterized through the evaluation of the percentage increase in weight of the sample following the immersion. Furthermore, this method details many immersion procedures which cover a large variety of materials. The rationale behind this diversity of procedure resides in the disparateness of the rate of assimilation of each material. In fact, by adjusting the water temperature and the period of exposure, it is possible to encompass a larger spectrum of compounds. Consequently, this attribute is essential to assess due to the predisposition of polymeric materials to absorb water and this proneness may lead to alterations of some properties, because some of them are sensitive of the water content of the compound. For instance, electrical insulation resistance and mechanical strength are prime examples of attributes that may be altered by the amount of water present in the sample. Lastly, it is important to keep in mind that the specimen does not necessarily assimilate water uniformly, therefore it is essential to appraise that aspect with this test.

Micom offers polymer testing services for a wide selection of material and products. For more information about the ASTM D570 test, we invite you to contact our material testing laboratory today. It will be our pleasure to answer your questions about either of those tests.

Micom Laboratories is a third party industrial material testing laboratory accredited by A2LA, CGSB, ISTA and many other organizations.
